Majid Majidi hopes to make film on Imam Hussein (AS)

Acclaimed Iranian director Majid Majidi hopes to make film on Imam Hussein (AS).

Acclaimed Iranian director Majid Majidi hopes to make a film on Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam and the grandson of Prophet Mohammad [PBUH].

Majidi, the director of ‘Muhammad: The Messenger of God’, told reporters on Wednesday that he hopes to make a movie on Imam Hussein (AS).

But he stressed that addressing Ashura, which marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), is a very difficult task, because of the significance and sensitivity of the issue.

Majidi also declared that he has always hoped to make a movie on Imam Reza (AS), the eighth Shia Imam.

“I have made a documentary on him before, but I have always wanted to be able to make a film on Ali ibn Musa al-Reza (AS).”

Imam Hussein (AS) was martyred along with his 72 companions in the Battle of Karbala, in southern Iraq, in 680 AD after fighting courageously for justice against thousands of soldiers of the Umayyad caliph of the time.

Shia Muslims in many countries hold mourning rituals every year to observe Ashura, which falls on the 10th day of Muharram - the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

Majidi won several awards for his prestigious films. His 1997 family drama flick ‘Children of Heaven’ was the first Iranian film to be nominated for an Oscar.
